MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 Pro Space Black: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

A real-world look at Apple's most portable powerhouse — trade-in process, Space Black in daily use, and whether the upgrade actually makes sense.

After a year and a half with the MacBook Pro 16-inch, I didn't need to upgrade. Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, Lightroom, Premiere Pro — everything ran without a single hiccup. But then Apple dropped the new Space Black finish, and that changed the conversation entirely.

This is the story of how a colorway convinced me to trade in a perfectly capable machine — and whether the 14-inch M3 Pro is actually the right move for a designer who lives in creative apps all day.

The real reason I upgraded

Honestly? The 16-inch was too much laptop. Too heavy for daily carry, too bulky for the kind of mobile setup I want. I'd been eyeing my wife's MacBook Air — so light, so portable — and knew I wanted something closer to that form factor without giving up pro performance.

The 14-inch M3 Pro hit that sweet spot. And in Space Black, it looked exactly like something I'd actually want to carry everywhere.

If your current MacBook handles everything you throw at it, the honest answer is: you don't need to upgrade. But if portability matters and the new finish speaks to your aesthetic — the upgrade makes more sense than it looks on paper.

Space Black in real life: the fingerprint test

This was my biggest concern going in. I tested the Space Black and the Midnight Blue side by side at the Apple Store — and the difference was clear.

Space Black picks up some fingerprints. But Midnight Blue is significantly worse — the dark blue finish shows smudges instantly and consistently. Compared to that, Space Black holds up well in daily use. It's not fingerprint-proof, but it's manageable.

If you're choosing between Midnight Blue and Space Black for fingerprint resistance: Space Black wins, no contest.

The specs I chose and why

Unified memory

18 GB

Space Black

For a designer running Figma, Premiere and Lightroom simultaneously, 18GB unified memory is the right call — not overkill, not a bottleneck. The 1TB storage gives room for project files and assets without constantly managing space. M3 Pro over M3 base is worth it for anyone doing sustained video or large file work.

The trade-in process at Apple Store

The trade-in itself was smooth — but there are things worth knowing before you walk in.

First: wipe your Mac before you go. I didn't check my Documents and Downloads folders carefully, and ended up erasing things I wasn't 100% sure about. Back everything up the night before, verify your backup, then go.

Second: I timed the visit around Black Friday. The 14-inch M3 Pro was eligible for the sale, which came as an Apple gift card rather than a direct discount — but an extra $240 back is still $240 back. If there's a sale coming, it's worth waiting a few days.

The appointment process took about 45 minutes including verification, trade-in assessment and setup. Staff were helpful and the whole experience felt premium — which, at this price point, it should.

Pros and cons after daily use

What Works

Noticeably lighter than 16-inch

Space Black looks premium daily

M3 Pro handles all creative apps

18GB RAM future-proofs the setup

Fingerprints manageable vs Midnight

Trade-in makes price easier to justify

No performance need if 16-inch runs fine

Gift card discount, not direct saving

Verdict

Overall

9/10

If you want a portable, powerful MacBook that looks as good as it performs — the 14-inch M3 Pro in Space Black is the best MacBook Apple has made for creative professionals who move. The upgrade from a 16-inch isn't about performance. It's about portability and daily experience. And that, for me, was more than worth it.
